Cute, Educational, Great for Imaginative Play Jul 21, 2010
By Midwest Mommy I purchased this for my baby daughter, but upon opening it I realized that this would make a great educational tool for my preschool age children. It's the perfect simple tool for teaching the life cycle of a caterpillar/butterfly. The yellow wings can be taken out, leaving a green caterpillar. Then the wings can be wrapped around the caterpillar and buttoned to form a cocoon, and finally placed through the caterpillar to make a butterfly (as pictured). I used this for an "insects" unit study with my children and they loved it. My 3 year old has been having a wonderful time "caring for" this caterpillar through imaginative play. The contrast of the hard wood and soft wings has made this a toy that holds the attention of my 4 month old also.
As with other products from Plan Toys, this is a high quality item. It is bigger than I pictured it being- a good surprise. Made of thick, sustainable rubberwood and painted with non-toxic water-based dyes. The sewing on the yellow wings and button seems durable. Excellent sale price. Highly recommended.
Boring for a 6 month old Jan 19, 2012
By Brookel For my 6 month old, there are two potential things that could make a great toy. First of all, anything he can chew on is an instant hit. Also, he likes toys that he can manipulate in some way, such as by rattling, clacking, stacking or moving parts. This toy doesn't have any chewable surfaces (the body is too big and the eyes too small) and it doesn't have anything for him to manipulate, except the fabric wings. I absolutely love natural wood toys but this one is very boring to me and my baby. Also, I'm worried that the eyes and the button on the wings could come off and become chocking hazards. It might be fun for an older child to take off the wings and put them back on, but he isn't old enough for that yet. Also I could see it possibly having some educational value in a few years. Overall, not a good baby toy.

Not impressed Dec 07, 2010
By Granbury Anne We've had this for a year. My boys, 1 and 3 show no interest in it. It seems well made, though there are a couple of features that could potentially be choking hazards if they broke off. In short, I had high hopes for this caterpillar, but so far it has been a waste of money. Oh, and my kids are easily entertained (i.e. play forever with scarves and coasters), so it's not like they are unfamiliar with wooden, natural toys designed for open-ended play. I actually bought 2 of these, and have never given away the second as a gift even, since it was such a bust :-/
